HIT THE ROAD

Taking an RV out on the open road is transformative: there’s simply no experience like it. Instead of the narrow confines of hotel rooms, your lodging is wherever you park it. Step out your door and immediately connect with your destination.

Wind rustling through the trees replaces the din of the city. The crackle of the campfire provides the night’s entertainment. Greet the morning with a quiet cup of coffee as songbirds flit to and fro.

These 25 routes will take you past stretches of road with jaw-dropping vistas and infinite horizons. At the end of the day, you’ll wind up in extraordinary destinations—iconic and forgotten alike.

So, let the stars above the Nevada desert fill your heart with wonder. Take your taste buds on a Southern odyssey. Stand on the edge of a red-rock canyon and let its vastness take your breath away.

You can experience all of this and sleep in your own bed every night. So, where will you take your home?

How to Use this Book

This book is intended to inspire and guide your RV travels. For each route, we chose places and experiences we love (and think you will love as well). We did our best to do the research for you so you can spend less time online and more time looking out the window and just enjoying your trip.

Each route includes the following features:

•  Miles/Hours Per Day: These reflect only the time you’ll spend behind the wheel, and do not include time spent exploring individual stops.

•  Route Overview: These sections list the major roads/highways you’ll drive each day. (Smaller roads are not always listed.) We made a point to make each day’s driving distance manageable—generally, no more than 300 miles (482 km) per day. Wherever possible, we avoided roads that are difficult or impossible to drive in an RV. Roads that do have any RV restrictions appear in italics. We encourage you to use an RV-specific GPS device or app to help you navigate each route.

•  Overnight Stops: Our top-pick campgrounds are always listed first. Route overviews and mileage presume you’re departing from these top-pick campgrounds. Most campgrounds included in the listings are moderately priced, but a variety of types are included at various price ranges depending on availability.

Remember that you can shorten or lengthen your stay at any given stop depending on the time you have available and your particular interests. The With More Time sidebars included throughout are meant to help you do this. If possible, add in extra days to simply rest and enjoy the amenities of your campground.

Best REGIONAL DELICACIES

One of the best things about RVing is that you have unlimited options for meals. Visit local restaurants or cook meals yourself. Either way, you’ll be able to store all your leftovers to enjoy the next day. Travelers with dietary restrictions may find it easier to eat while RVing than on a traditional road trip. Whether you are cooking for yourself or eating out, we always recommend checking out local ingredients and dishes.

HUCKLEBERRIES

Huckleberries, often found in the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies, are used in jams and jellies, candy, pie, ice cream, and milkshakes. Places to taste them in this book include the Park Café in Saint Mary, MT, Marblemount Diner in Marblemount, WA; and Purple Pie Place in Custer, SD.

LOCAL HUCKLEBERRIES ARE SERVED AT THE PURPLE PIE PLACE IN CUSTER, SD.

LOBSTER ROLLS

Lobster rolls (cold lobster salad served in a warm bun and eaten hot dog-style) are often found at outdoor restaurants, called lobster pounds, in coastal Maine.

LOBSTER ROLL

BARBECUE

Barbecue refers to seasoned meat slow cooked over a low, smoky fire. There are several regional varieties to explore. Be sure to try the brisket in Central Texas, particularly Austin, and the dry-rubbed ribs in Memphis, TN.

Bonnie Sinclair

About the Author

Grant and Bonnie Sinclair are a couple of 40-something teachers with a passion for travel. It doesn’t matter what kind: plane, train, boat or their trusty truck and camper.

Travel has been a huge component of their relationship from early on. Their first trip together was to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, but it was their summer road trip to Yellowstone National Park that really cemented the relationship. There is just something about spending 100 hours in the car with someone, sleeping in a tent along the way, that truly tests compatibility. And now, many years later, they have visited all 50 states, more than 20 countries and more than 275 national park sites.

In 2016, they purchased a travel trailer and started blogging, focusing on RV travel and visiting the national parks, and have written over 250 articles on various aspects of travel. All told, they have put about 40,000 miles on their camper and spent countless nights on the road.
